So, you proudly did your bit and went for the green energy option, installing a heat pump for your heating or cooling needs. Maybe you actively chose this option, or maybe your planning permission meant you had to go with a heat pump as a low-carbon option. All was going well until your energy bill landed and now you're ready to cry about your heat pump running costs! You thought you were supposed to save on your running costs! Sound familiar? Well, at EnviroRight Renewables we know it doesn't need to be this way!

Making the switch from gas to air source heat pumps or ground source heat pumps offers real benefits, but you might need to think differently to ensure your heat pump is operating efficiently and running costs are low. Here we're sharing our top three tips to reduce high heat pump running costs. 'Why only three?' we hear you say...Well the truth is there are many ways to improve heat pump efficiency, and sometimes deeper inspection may be required. However there are a few things we always like to check with our customers first.

  1. Regular maintenance: Just like any other heating system, regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal operation of your heat pump. Make sure to clean or replace filters, check your coefficient of performance (COP)* regularly and schedule annual maintenance with a professional engineer. If you're in Dorset, Hampshire or Wiltshire...we know a guy!

  2. Low & long: Running a heat pump is a little different from using a gas boiler to heat your home. Before you made the switch, you might have waited until you felt chilly before you hit that thermostat up, knowing a quick blast would warm things up quickly. With a heat pump we often advise running heat pumps more consistently, at a steady lower temperature, to remain comfortable and energy efficient. It's a different way of thinking and can feel counter intuitive, but it's important to remember that a heat pump and gas boiler are two very different things.

  3. The right settings: It goes without saying that if your bill is unexpectedly high, you need to check for warnings, or issues causing auxillary heating systems to kick in. It's also important to consider how you're running the system and what settings you have on. However, some more complex settings may require an experienced engineer, to assess and adapt the settings based on your specific needs.

*If you're unsure what coefficient of performance (COP) means it's super important that you speak with an engineer. We would expect any customer who has a heat pump installed, would have had this throughly explained by their installer. It's a critical part of understanding how your heat pump works and how it is running at any given time.

Now time for the disclaimer. If your heat pump isn't running efficiently, there could be many different scenarios at play. Whilst we know a thing or two about heat pumps, it's important that you speak to a professional. Put your faith in a qualified engineer for any servicing, maintenance and repairs.
